The creative process.
From clay to ceramics. The journey of each pottery piece from inception to firing.
Clay.
The clay is soft and malleable! Even the lightest touch will leave a fingerprint indent. As it dries, it will become harder and more forgiving to pressure. During the “leather hard” consistency (not pictured), the piece can be trimmed and cleaned up to remove any imperfections.
Bisque ware.
The piece undergoes its first firing in the kiln. This is called the bisque firing. All the water has been evaporated. The piece is now hard, but still not as strong as ceramic. If not adequately dried before firing, a piece may explode in the kiln! After bisque firing, the piece is ready for glazing.
Ceramic piece.
At temperatures of 1650 Fahrenheit and greater, clay particles begin to fuse, transforming into ceramic. Without glazing, the piece would be porous. In addition to being decorative, the glaze also waterproofs the piece. Now this vase is ready for some flowers.
